czterdziesty drugi rok. Matke i dziecko. Warsztat – blok... Dziecko twarz ma liliową, matka włosy jak mlecko, powiedz mi matko – pyta malec – co to znaczy: DALEKO... Daleko to znacy za górami, za lasami i za rzekami... Daleko to znaczy szyny, Daleko to morskie podróże, okręty i przestwór siny i góry w słońca purpurze... Daleko to wyspy złote i wonne wiartu podmuchy to jakaś soczysta zieloność i piasek miękki i suchy. Lecz jak wytłumaczyć dziecku, co znaczy: DALEKO... Daleko – kochane dziecko (a łza się chybocze na rzęsach) daleko to z bloku naszego aż do bloku Többensa... A powiedz mi mamo kochana, co to znaczy: DAWNO... Dawno to wieczór miejski, płonące lampy, neony... to cichy spokój w mieszkaniu i dobrze piec napalony... Dawno – to ciastko z Ziemiańskiej, dawniej – to obiad przy radiu dawno – to rano "Nasz Przegląd", i wieczór w kino Paladium. Dawno – to miesiąc nad morzem, dawno – to zdjęcia z wycieczki i ślubne zdjęcie z welonem i biały chlebek bez sieczki... Lecz jak wytłumaczyć dziecku tę przeszłość jasną i sławna, gdy nic... nic przecież nie wie... jak wytłumaczyć: DAWNO... Widzisz, kochane dziecko stare i smutne za młodu dawno – to znaczy gdy dawno... nie przydzielano nam miodu... A powiedz mi mamo, powiedz, co to, co słyszę nocą... świstt taki długi... daleki co to tak świszcze i po co... Jak wytłumaczyć dziecku jaki wziąć przykład i motyw, by wytłumaczyć nocny, daleki świst lokomotyw... Jak wytłumaczyć szyny i długą drogę w bezkresy, radość mknięcia w sleepingu i oszałałe eksresy. Dworce, sygnały, zwrotnice, nowe miasta, ulice, bilety, przesiadki, bagaż, kurier, bufet i tragarz. Migot światełek nocą, i dymów liliowy ślad. Jak wytłumaczyć... i po co, że gdzieś jeszcze w dali jest świat... means beyond the mountains whistle
the forests and the rivers… Afar
means railway… Afar
means a voyage in the sea, ships
and livid spaces, and
mountains in the purple sun… Afar
means golden islands and
winds smelling blowing of the wind, that
is juicy greenery and
soft dry sand. But
how to explain it to a child, what
does it mean the word: afar while
he does not know what is a mountain, and he does not know what we call a river… and
he has not like mother… and has not like me the
images under the eyelids, then
how to explain it to a child, what
does it mean the word: afar. Afar
– my beloved child (and
a tear waves on the eye-lashes), afar
means from our bloc till

nothing... how to explain: long ago… You see, my beloved child, old and sad in your youth, long ago – means a long time ago… when they did not ration us honey… And tell me, mother, tell, what do I hear at nights… a whistle so long… so far… what is whistling and what for… How to explain to a child, which example or a source to bring to explain the nightly, far whistles of locomotives… how to explain railways and a long path into the spaces, the joy of traveling in a sleeping car and in riding mad expresses. * Töbens
– the German owner of workshops where Jews men and women were engaged in
forced labour, producing shoes and uniforms for the German military. At the
time of the deportation actions, it was promised that the worker in
thse workshops will not be included, and they have to live in certain houses
called "blocs". The promise was not kept by the Germans and all the Jews were
deported to Treblinka like
