Hi there--

I was brought up Polish Catholic, but converted to Judaism 5 years ago. Your site is totally great! My Judaism teacher suggested that I might have Jews in my family, but I just don't really know--everyone I know in my family is Catholic except for me. If you hear of anyone with the name "Paweski" out there, or any "Wagners" from Galitzia, I might be related. Loved your joke page--esp. the one about the Israeli flags in Hebrew!!!

Take care & God bless--

Dear Ada:
I have just mailed to a complete text about Szlengel and all his known poems in Polish.
I have sent it all to you as a way of preserving the book that appeared in very limited edition in 1977
and Copyrighted by the National Publishing Institute in Warsaw with poems gathered and edited by
Irena Maciejewska with her notes and footnotes.
This is about all that is known about Szlengel although I hae come across his name in numerous books and stories..In 1977 Poland was publishing very limited editions about 10,000 and less per book having anything to do with Jews.
So by sending to the copies of t his book to add to the preservation of his memory.
There is also a somewhat monumental anthology of Jewish poetry in Polish PIESN UDZIE CALO.
I am sure that there are numerous people in Israel who can translate from Polish into English and from Yiddish into English ...and Hebrew. It is all work that needs to be done.

If only you could be joined on the shores of TelAviv, with the 6,000,000 who share such a fate as to diminish what supposedly civilizes us. I write as a Christian, but experience as a Jew, or at least I feel that I share an enmity that the Jews of the Holocaust have no way of exacting. Today the Jewish People can be a great People, if only the rest of us leave them in peace, to get on with their remembrance and their lives.

My father left Poland as war broke out. He had friends in the Polish secret service, and was being drawn into it himself. He escaped and fought with the French Resistance until he was able to join the Polish government in exile, in England. He was sent back to France and was wounded.

I have tried and tried to find some link with my father's family who are still living in Poland (Warsaw), but nothing comes up. Any Suggestions?

Please forgive my presumption in using your first name. My question is quite a simple one, if I may be allowed to ask: With all the pain and su fering your people have , how do you still manage to believe in God? when ever I allow myself to believe in God I am quickly jolted out of this faith by all the suffering both past and present. I have so many things to say. Maybe I am still thinking about everthing and don't know what to say. I am 25. When I was in grade school and read Anne Frank's diary and many more titles since then, I have wondered what in the world happened during the holo aust. Maybe not even what but HOW does this happen. I believe it. I don't find it fascinating. It's like a horromovie. Why watch it or put it in your life. I just can't not think about it. I just don't understand. I guess if people did it would have
nev r happened. Sometimes, I look at pictures or if we are watching a special on the history channel, I look at the people who were killed or misplaced and I just see people. They don't look any differnt. Such sweet babies, beautiful men and women, old young. They are people. I get sick thinking if someone ever touched my family or baby's life in this way. This probably doesn't make sense. I don't know why I am writing this. Does this get read? I just want to let someone, anyone, know I care and hurt for the p ople who were and are vicitims of others

In case you missed it in the theatres, on March 21 Columbia TriStar Home Video will release on videocassette and DVD, Jakob the Liar, an unforgettable uplifting drama starring Academy Award-Winner Robin Williams. In Nazi-occupied
Poland during World War I , poor Jewish caf owner Jakob (Robin Williams) accidentally overhears a forbidden radio news bulletin signaling Soviet military successes againGerman forces. To combat the overwhelming depression and suicide that pervades the ghetto, Jakob tells ict tious news bulletins about Allied advances against the Nazis. These lies keep hope and humor alive among the ghetto inhabitants-spirits are lifted, hearts are refreshed and hope is reborn. The Germans learn of the mythical radio, however , and begin a s arch for the resistance hero who dares operate it. The film also stars Liev Schrieber (Sphere), Armin Mueller-Stahl (The Thirteenth Floor) and Alan Arkin (Edward Scissorhands). The DVD also features an audio commentary by Director Peter Kassovitz and a king-of-the-film-featurette. For information, you can go to the website for Columbia TriStar www.cthv.com. The releases will be at video stores nationwide on in three weeks.

Kanczuga
I must tell you that the article that you had about the Jewish Kanczuga was touching sad and real. My grandmother who I knew well and who just passed away was born and raised there. my father and ucles and aunt remember prewar Kanczuga well.

I live in Teaneck New Jersey and there a re a number of committed Jewish families including the Rav's grandaughter that live in Teaneck and are bound by that history. My father was moved greatly by the story and admits sadly that his grandparentsand au ts were murdered at the spot described in the piece. the head of the Kanczuga society is my neighbor and is interested in creating a trip there.

A Holtzman Story
Dear Ms. Holtzman,

I did a search for the surname Holtzman, and according to Yahoo, you were one of seven. When I saw your mother's picture, it grabbed me. She was very beautiful, as was my grandmother Stella, at that age. The fact that a polish woman had the name of Hol zman astounded me. My fat's name is Holtzman and his grandfather was born in Germany. My mother's parents, the Shipek's, were both born in Poland. My father was born in the U.S., as was his mother. My mother (Wanda) and Aunt Barbara were born somewhere in France because of the holocaust. I may sound like an ignorant American, but I've come to believe (over my 28 years) that this union divided by war caused a patriotic rift in my family.

Although the paternal and maternal sides of my family no longer speak (due to completely different reasons), your web page has made me feel that this Holtzman/German thing was never really an issue. Which would totally change my perception of his ory. If indeed Holtzman's were a common lot in Poland. Either way I would be truly enlightened to know your story.

My parents James Patrick Holtzman and his wife Wanda raised six children. Heather Ann(29), Heidi Ann(28), James Christoper(25), Rebecca Lynn (22), Shawn Paul, and Eric Scott (twins,21). They divorced in 1990. It's been a long hard struggle since d before). But Heather's getting married in October.

Us kids have taken it upon ourselves to keep this family together. Eric (the youngest) is currently estranged. Gramma Shipek (Stella) has never wanted to talk about Poland, even though she had at least ten brothers and sisters. I would love to he r from you. My father's family(who I haven't spoken to in ten years)includes wife, Dorothy, and two children, Amy and Nicole.

My uncle Scotty has at least one male child. His women are not worth noting except for Rachel, she was a saint out of the Bible, and I'm not religious. Rachel was a dear sweet woman. Scott and my dad's family were pretty much evil. In other words the H ltzman name, but it's still mine. Separate but equal. I don't know a thing about your time or your life, but if your free a reply would be poured over.

If I haven't scared you, please respond.

Sincerely,
Heidi Holtzman

The holocaust was a terrible happening. We all should learn from this to lend a helping hand to those who are in need of it. Don't just sit back and let one evil man take out a whole race. No one should have that power. Only God knows when it is time fo a human being to join him in eternal bliss. As many people were tormented and killed, we sat back and partied and went along with our merry lives. It is time to take a stand! A stand for morality! I am outraged by the fact that so many were influenced by on corrupt man. Since when do we dowhatever we are told. If one would have taken a stand many would have followed, and many innocent lives would have been saved. We should be ashamed!

I spent some time looking over your website. I was very impressed with your site, and with your activities. I know this journey must have been so painful at times. I'm a big strong guy but I'll admitt that tears welled up in my eyes as I looked at and rea your materials. I know that everything I find out about my fathers family, and the town of
Zabludow is both a joy and a pain. Just this past week my 11 year old son came home from Hebrew school telling me with a very puzzeled look that one of his little l ssmates was saying how millions of jews were murdered. He really didn't know if to believe it. I gave him the broad outlines, and told him that I knew quite a bit, and could tell him much more when he felt ready. He told me that he wasn't, and would rat e wait until sixth grade when they cover it in Hebrew school. We've made an effort to give him a Jewish education and strong identity. I pray that at the close of the next century our children's children will be bravely carrying our great heritage into t e rture. Shalom, Tilford

Czestochowa (c.1940 or 1941) printed with the article about Czestochowa during WWII. Is it possible to get a copy? I, of course, would be happy to pay all costs. My father may be i that picture. Shalom ! I just want to say that I'll never forget what happened in the WW2. It's a shame to all civilised world, not only to
Germany. How could that bloodshed happen in Europe ? I mean, for many centuries, europeans considered themselves as the most adva ced p rt of the World. Well, some people might say "We didn't knew"....What ?!! Hitler wasn't in Germany's leadership for 5 years, but for more than 12. Let's not forget about the condition of the Jews in Russia, the lowest in Europe at the turn of the ce tury. If russians like Ignatiev didn't start with the "Progroms" jews wouldn't need Israel to live. After all Zionism started in Russia and Poland, t the time, part of ther Russian Empire. I will not forget. Ps: I'm Catholic.

Regina's daughter. Sophia and her husband had two children. Their daughter's name is Monia she escaped the Nazi's with her husband. Last I know of them they were in Spain. Sophia's son's name is Simon. He escaped the Nazi's by going to the US and then went to France. That is all I know of Simon. Sophia and her husband were taken by the Nazi's from Paris France to a concentration camp and were never heard of again. Regina disappeared during the holucaust also. She was presumably killed by th Ge mans. My cousin, who keeps the family record, will probably send me more info. on them soon. I will let you know what she finds. Thank you for all you have done. What the world needs is beneficent dictator who would use the threat of "swords and pruning hooks" over the heads of nation leaders who would like to make war, and provide counselors to show them how to solve their problems.

I enjoy the fruits of your efforts, however, I would like to see the shtetl TOLSTOYA, SW of Warsaw, on your list and map. Sources tell me that on October 1942, the 1000 residents were transported to Belzec, and exterminated.

Ada, you were right: I did exactly what you said and it worked. We would be very interested in having Access to this Lodz Registry book. Do you have any idea how one can get access to a copy through Inter-Library loan or what the exact title is under which it ould be found in libraries? Thank you very much for your efforts - if there is any way I could help or assist in data input I would be willing to help, Yours sincerely Fritz Neubauer and Marilyn. Is there any way to check what of the Steinhart/Janovsky/Fuchs family is mentioned in the book?

As the picture of your mother Rivka was slowly downloading on my system, I thought to myself "gee, I should really suggest that they convert this to a black and white picture...it would download much faster...". But then, the complete picture materialized and a face appeared of a beautiful woman in a wonderful golden colorized hue. I then said to myself "that WAS worth the wait". I want to thank you for that wonderful visual experience...I love looking at old family pictures, even if they are are not of my family. I will now start looking at the rest of your site, but I wanted to thank you again for providing me with a very nice e perience on such a sad, sad, day of remembrance. Kind Regards, Ken Meyerson

Hi, I'm Robert, Mindy's husband. I know you wanted us to wait for an invitation toyour website, but I was curious to read and learn more about you and what drives your passion. Having not grown up Jewish, but at the same time having studied the Holocaust sively, I see the Gombin Society and its projects a bit differently than most of the members. While I am dedicated to the causes of the Cemetary and Chelmno plaque for my own reasons, I am always curious about what motivates others. p n o e r t a h ou i ( nd family history) unfold.
