The Protocols of Mlawa Jewish Community Committee 1925-1933

Since the beginning of the 19th century, the Jews consisted one third of the population in Mlawa. In town a very active cultural, religious and social activity existed.  There was a large Yeshiva, Talmud Torah, Beth Yaacov, Yavne School, which belonged to the Mizrachi movement and Hebrew gymnasium where Jewish students from Mlawa and environs studied. The Jewish community published a few daily newspapers, weekly and monthly magazines. All the Zionist and non-Zionist parties were represented in Mlawa, starting from the Communists, the Bund, Agudath Israel, Chassidim from all circles, all the Zionist parties from left to right' sports movements, Hapoel and Maccabi.

 

The Community Committee, ועד העדה"", consisted of 12 elected representatives, managed all the community affairs and activities, such as Talmud Torah, Mikveh (ritual bath), Kashruth (ritual lawfulness especially of food), Shkhita (ritual slaughtering), management and maintenance of Bathei Midrash (religious schools) and maintaining the large synagogue.

 

The Committee also handled the social activities of the community, like Bikur Holim (visiting the sick), Linat Zedek (hospice for the poor), Maot Hitim (distribution of wheat assigned for charity) and care for Kosher food for Jewish soldiers serving in Mlawa and its environs.

 

The Hebrew language was used by the young generation but Yiddish was ruled in the Community life and also in the Community Committee meetings.

 

The life of the Community was cut off with the outbreak of World War II.

 

On June 1994, a mission of Mlawers of all generations from Israel and the Diaspora came to Poland for a monument dedication ceremony.  37 people flew and participated in the moving ceremony, by the invitation of the town authorities. The memorial consisted of seven very large pillars all made from Matzevot (tombstones) removed by the Nazis from the Jewish cemetery of Mlawa. We were warmly received by our hosts.

 

In a hotel in Mlawa where we stayed, the regional judge Jeruslaw Tnicziwski-Kwieczen surprised us with a visit. He showed us a most rare exhibit of which existence we knew nothing.

This was the original book of protocols of the meetings of the Community Committee ועד העדה"", which was written after each meeting, from 1925 until May 1933. We were delighted and offered the judge any price to purchase this treasure. The judge refused because it was an historical exhibit, and as such - should not be taken from Poland.

 

Upon our return to Israel we tried our utmost to bring the Protocol Book to Israel, to no avail. Then we asked one of our friends in Mlawa to photocopy for us the 200 pages Protocol Book and she did it and sent it to us. The original has remained in the chamber of judge Kwieczen until today.

 

A photocopy was made and submitted to Yad Vashem (archive no. 14518), Beth Hatefutsoth and Beth Lochamei Hagetaot, available for the researchers. We also keep one copy. Attached are 16 example pages.

 

 

מלאבה עיר ואם בישראל

בתחילת המאה ה-19 היוו היהודים כשליש מאוכלוסיית העיר. בעיר הייתה פעילות תרבותית ענפה ביותר. הייתה שם ישיבה גדולה, תלמוד תורה, בית יעקב, בית ספר "יבנה" המשתייך לזרם המזרחי וגימנסיה עברית בה למדו יהודים מכל הסביבה. הקהילה היהודית הוציאה מספר עיתונים יומיים, שבועונים וירחונים. כל המפלגות הציוניות והלא ציוניות פעלו בעיר, החל מהקומוניסטים, הבונד, אגודת ישראל והחסידים מכל הזרמים, כל המפלגות הציוניות מימין ומשמאל, תנועות ספורט, הפועל ומכבי.

 

ועד העדה שמנה 12 נבחרים, ניהל את כל ענייני הקהילה, כגון: תלמוד תורה, מקווה, כשרות, שחיטה, ניהול ותחזוקה של בתי מדרש ובית הכנסת הגדול. הועד גם דאג לפעילות סוציאלית של העדה כגון ביקור חולים ולינת צדק, מעות חיטים, דאגה לאוכל כשר לחיילים היהודים שבסביבה.

 

השפה העברית אכן שלטה באוכלוסייה היהודית הצעירה, אולם שפת האידיש שלטה בקהילה וכמו כן בישיבות ועד העדה.

חיי  הקהילה נקטעו עם פרוץ מלחמת העולם השנייה.

 

ביוני 1944 נסעה קבוצת מלאבאים על דורותיהם מישראל ומהתפוצות שמנתה כ-37 איש לפולין לפי הזמנת מוסדות העיר מלאבה לטכס הנחת אבן היסוד לאנדרטה בשטח בית הקברות היהודי שנחרב ע"י הנאצים.  האנדרטה בנויה משברי המצבות שנהרסו על ידי הנאצים, בצורת מנורה בעלת שבעה קנים.

 

המשלחת התקבלה על ידי מארחינו ברוב הדר. במלון במלאבה בו התאכסנו, בא לבקרנו שופט מחוזי במלאבה ששמו ירוסלב טניטשבסקי - קוויעצ'ן והפתיע  אותנו במוצג שכלל לא היה מוכר לנו.

היה זה ספר פרוטוקולים מקורי מישיבות וועד הקהילה והמועצה היהודית במלאבה, כתוב בעברית קליגרפית יפה מלאה אמרות ומשפטים יפיפיים שלא נשמעים כלל כיום, למרות שהישיבות נוהלו בשפת האידיש.

אורו עינינו בראותנו את האוצר הזה שנוהל משנת 1925 עד מאי 1933 והצענו לרוכשו בכל מחיר. תשובתו של השופט: אין למוצג מחיר בשל היותו מוצג היסטורי ואסור להוציאו מגבולות פולין.

 

בחוזרנו ארצה עשינו כל שביכולתנו להשיג את ספר הפרוטוקולים והדבר לא צלח. פתאום עלה הרעיון לנצל היכרותנו את אחת מידידותיו של השופט ולבקשה לקחת בהשאלה את היומן ליום יומיים ולצלמו בכל מחיר. וכך היה. היומן צולם והועבר לידי וועד יוצאי מלאבה בישראל. המקור לדאבוננו עדיין שוכן בספרייתו של השופט קוויעצ'ען. ההעתק צולם בארץ שנית והעתקיו שוכנים כבוד בספריות " בית לוחמי הגטאות", "יד ושם" (מס' ארכיון 14518) ו"בית התפוצות" ועומדים לרשות הקהל המעוניין לעיון. העתק אחד כמובן שמור בידי הוועד.
