Dear Citizens and Land Lovers
Association of Mlawa, Honored Guests,
Today
Mlawa people from many countries are meeting in a special place, in the Jewish
cemetery, which contains the ashes of generations who lived and worked in Mlawa
for over 500 years. The Germans behaved towards these people in a disgraceful
way by turning the cemeteries into stone quarries.
The events,
which took place here, went far beyond any conceivable experience of humanity.
Those events undermined and enraged the way we relate to those people, who saw
themselves as representing and carrying on the European civilization. When the
time came to liquidate the Mlawa ghetto, special units entered the ghetto to
destroy, bomb, loot, and burn. The Mlawa ghetto and the cemetery in which we
are now standing became a sea of ruins, and were later on erased from the face
of the earth so no sign would remain of the abhorrent murder. The Nazi military
and police units were well aware of the fact that "with no people around
only the stones will speak." The Germans wanted to force these stone to
remain silent, so once the people had been murdered, they started in
"murdering" the stones. But even they could not foresee that places
empty of people -- their homes and graves -- are capable of screaming. That
emptiness pointed out the fact a murder of an extraordinary scale took place
here, an attack on the sacred rest of the deceased.
When
we wanted to honor the memory of our town's citizens, we erected a monument
from the remains of the cemetery, shaped like a menorah (candelabra),
the symbol of light and of the State of Israel. Plaques of black granite stone,
brought here from Israel, the Holy Land, speak of justice, of not creating
history based on human injustice, death, and ruins. These plaques point to the
victory of truth and humane values. This has a special significance in this
difficult period, in which humanity has not yet freed itself from poisoning
minds, and in which the human conscience is still trying to recover from the
damage done to it during Nazi totalitarianism, which had the malicious intent
to eliminate the entire Jewish people.
In
1998 we have lived through two historic dates: The first --55 years since the
Warsaw ghetto uprising; the second --50 years, a jubilee, since the
establishment of the State of Israel.
In
Jewish Warsaw they told the Germans unequivocally -- no more humiliation or
murder without a price! The Jews went out to battle for their right to live and
to preserve their dignity and human value. They fought for their right to die
the death of fighters.
This
year marks the 50th anniversary of Israel's birth, which proves the
eternal existence of the Jewish people -- the victory of life over death. Fifty
years of Israel's independence in our modern era have passed, and we are happy
with its wonderful development due to the perseverance and dedicated work of
its sons and daughters. The entire world's eyes are watching its remarkable
achievements in technology and economics.

As
representatives of the Organization of Mlawa Survivors in Israel and the
Diaspora we heartily welcome all of you. We appreciate and thank you for being
present here and for your cooperation in erecting this monument.
We
are especially grateful to Mr. Jerzi Sliwczynski,
who contributed so much, days and nights, to bring about the completion of the
monument and of the fence surrounding this cemetery.
We
also owe gratitude to the Nissenbaum Family
and to Mrs. Sikorsky, who had the merit to be the builders of the fence around
this Mlawa cemetery that we are dedicating today. Thank you from the bottom of
our hearts.
Many
thanks to the mayor, Mr. Henryk Antczak, and to the members of the city
council, who assisted in the realization of this monument and in organizing
this ceremony and the unveiling of the monument.
The
Jewish settlement in Mlawa started over 490 years ago in 1507. In 1857
Mlawa had 3,290 residents, half of whom (1,650) were Jewish. At
the start of World War II Mlawa had about 7,000 Jews, about a third of the
city's population.
The
Jews of Mlawa, who were craftsmen and merchants and who had contributed much to
the development and flourishing of the town, were wiped out by the murderous
Nazis and their accomplices. Shortly we will hold the ceremony of unveiling the
monument, which is dedicated to the memory of the Mlawa Jews murdered in the
Holocaust and to the memory of the Mlawa cemeteries, which were defaced and
destroyed.
This
monument commemorates a unique period in human history, a period during which
man lost his humanity, a period of denial of faith in God and in humans, a
denial based on a twisted ideology of extreme nationalism and racism. During
that period of the darkest jungle one ray of light was emitted by a noble
minority, who were ready to sacrifice their lives in order to offer help and to
save the lives of some of the Jews.
The
noble Sliwczynski family won such merit. Thank you Jerzi from all of us.
We
would like to offer condolences for the untimely demise of Mr. Stanislaw
Menzyk, who did not make it to this ceremony. This man did much for realization
of this monument. It was his initiative that got the monument for the Jews
murdered by the Nazis inside the Mlawa ghetto to be moved to a central,
respectable, and well-groomed site in the center of town. We shall never forget
this good man.
As
we stand by the monument in this cemetery our hearts are weeping. At the same
time we are proud of our hometown Mlawa, represented by the Association of
Friends of Mlawa, which has assisted us in erecting a memorial for generations
to come honoring our loved ones who perished in the Holocaust. We shall wrap
this monument with love and pride for you, our murdered brothers and sisters,
and we shall denounce the Nazi criminals and their accomplices and despise
them. Gone is the Jewish community of Mlawa, and all that remains is a monument
shaped as seven-stem candelabra, symbolizing the State of Israel.
Babies
and children with their mothers, boys and girls, men and women, elderly and
disabled were murdered in the death camps Treblinka and Auschwitz, as well
as in this place, inside the Mlawa ghetto. May their memory be blessed.
We
request the citizens of Mlawa, and especially the youth, the future citizens of
the city, to guard and to tend this cemetery and to be proud that it has become
their lot to erect this statue for the glory of the city and for the memory of
its citizens who perished in the Holocaust.
Our
dear murdered parents, brothers, and sisters -- we know that you were modest
people, working people, full of faith, who fulfilled your civil duties for the
city of Mlawa and the Polish state at the same time you fulfilled your
obligations to the Jewish people and its tradition. You participated in the
growth and thriving of Mlawa and its surrounding area, in trade, craft,
industry, and banking. You were also active in cultural life, in public life,
and in political life. Many of you fought in wars for Polish independence: In
the 1863 uprising, in the battles of "Miracle on the Wisla" in 1920,
and during World War II in the Polish army and with the partisans.
Our
dear parents, brothers, and sisters, your spilt blood and your memory will
remain with us forever. The eternal flame in the memorial tent in Yad Vashem in
holy Jerusalem is a decisive proof to the memory of the Jewish people that was
annihilated in the Holocaust in Europe. Our dear parents, brothers, and sisters
who perished in the Holocaust -- we believe that your pure souls will be
shrouded in God's mercy for eternity.
May your souls be bound in
the bundle of life. Amen.

התיישבות היהודים במלאבה החלה
כבר לפני 490 שנה, בשנת 1507. בשנת 1857 היו במלאבה 3290 תושבים מחצית (1650) יהודים. עם פרוץ מלחמת
העולם השנייה היו במלאבה כ-7000 יהודים, כשליש מכלל האוכלוסייה.
היהודים במלאבה, שהיו בעלי מלאכה וסוחרים ותרמו רבות
לפיתוחה ושגשוגה של העיר, נכחדו ע"י הנאצים הצוררים ועוזריהם.
בעוד שמן לא רב יתקיים טכס גילוי הלוט מהמצבה, המוקדשת
לזכרם של יהודי מלאבה, שנרצחו בשואה, ולזכר בתי העלמין היהודיים של מלאבה שהושחתו
ונהרסו.
המצבה מנציחה תקופה חד-פעמית
בהיסטוריה האנושית, תקופה בה אדם איבד צלם אנוש, תקופה של הכחשת אמונה באלוהים
ובבני אדם, המתבססת על אידיאולוגיה מעוותת של לאומנות וגזענות קיצוניים. בתקופה זו
של הג'ונגל החשוך ביותר האירה קרן אור מצד מיעוט אציל, אשר היה מוכן להקריב את
חייו על מנת להגיש עזרה ולהציל את חייהם של חלק מהיהודים. זכות זו נפלה בחלקה של
משפחת שליבצ'ינסקי האצילה.

ברצוני להביע את צערנו על
פטירתו בטרם עת של מר' סטניסלב מנז'יק ז"ל, שלא זכה להיות כאן אתנו באירוע
זה. האיש פעל רבות להגשמת רעיון המצבה. בזכותו וביוזמתו הועתקה המצבה לזכר היהודים
שנרצחו על ידי הנאצים בתוך הגטו במלאבה, למקום מרכזי, מכובד ומטופח יפה באמצע
העיר. לעולם לא נשכח איש טוב זה.
בעמדנו לפני המצבה בבית קברות
זה, לבבותינו בוכים ובו זמנית אנו גאים בעיר מולדתנו מלאבה, העיר המיוצגת ע"י
האגודה לידידי מלאבה, שעזרה לנו
להקים גל-עד לדורות לזכר יקירינו שנספו בשואה. נעטוף את מצבת הזיכרון באהבה וגאווה
עבורכם, אחינו ואחיותינו הנרצחים, ונגנה את הפושעים הנאצים ועוזריהם ונבוז להם.
הייתה ואיננה קהילה יהודית במלאבה וכעת נשארה מצבה
דמוית מנורה עם שבעה קנים, המסמלת את מדינת ישראל.
תינוקות וילדים עם אימותיהם, צעירים וצעירות, גברים
ונשים, זקנים ונכים נרצחו במחנות ההשמדה טרבלינקה ואושוויץ, וגם במקום הזה, בתוך
הגטו במלאבה.
יהי זכרם ברוך.
בקשתנו מבני העיר מלאבה בעיקר
מהנוער, אזרחי ובני העיר בעתיד, לשמור ולטפח את שטח בית הקברות ולהיות גאים שנפל
בחלקם הזכות ליזום ולבנות אנדרטה זן לתפארת העיר ולזכר אזרחיה שנספו בשואה.
יקירנו הנרצחים, הורים אחים
ואחיות - אנו יודעים שהייתם אנשים צנועים, אנשי עבודה, בעלי אמונה ומילאתם בו
זמנית את חובותיכם המשפחתיות והאזרחיות כלפי העיר מלאבה והמדינה הפולנית, ובו זמנית
כלפי העם היהודי ומסורתו.
השתתפתם בתהליך הצמיחה והשיגשוג של העיר מלאבה
וסביבתה במסחר, במלאכה, בתעשייה ובבנקאות. כמו כן, פעלתם גם מהבחינה התרבותית,
הציבורית והפוליטית - רבים מכם
נלחמו במלחמות על עצמאות המדינה הפולנית: בהתקוממות 1863, בקרבות "נס על
הויסלה" בשנת 1920 ובזמן מלחמת העולם השנייה במסגרת הצבא הפולני והפרטיזנים.
הורינו, אחינו ואחיותינו
היקרים, דמכם הנשפך וזיכרונכם יישארו לעד עמנו. אש התמיד באהל יזכור ב"יד ושם"
בירושלים הקדושה מהווה הוכחה נחרצת לזיכרון העם היהודי שהושמד בשואה באירופה.
הורינו, אחינו ואחיותינו היקרים, המושמדים בשואה -
אנו מאמינים, שנשמותיכן הטהורות תהיינה עטופות בחסד אלוהי לנצח נצחים.
תהיינה נשמותיכן צרורות בצרור החיים. אמן.
