SEARCHING FOR MEMORY AND DIALOGUE -
- BIALYSTOK 65 YEARS LATER

17 - 19 may 2009, Bialystok

PRESIDENT OF BIALYSTOK and PODLASIE VOIVOD

The leading idea of the conference is Memory and Dialogue within the area of mutual understanding of the Polish-Jewish relations. The event refers to the 65th anniversary of the Bialystok Ghetto Uprising.

The remembrance of life and Extermination of Bialystok Jews is an integral history of our City’s identity and Polish culture.

Dialogue and respect for Memory as the basis of communication between Jews and Poles - a process opening a possibility of learning about the feelings experienced by each party, restoring respect for Memory and torment, enabling a change in prejudice and attitudes, creating conditions for explaining diversity and mutual close relations.

Past – marked with torment suffered by the two nations, including the tragedy of Polish Jews’ Extermination and their persecution until emigration as the basis of communication and dialogue.

Today – new generations start to take part in the Dialogue on the basis of understanding and respect for their suffering. They develop cooperation in different fields, regardless of their nationality and traumatic experiences of the Past. Such actions give hope for peaceful co-existence.

Bialystok – a city of many century long co-existence of cultures, including rich Jewish culture, today – a place of building a new realm of Communication with reference to learning about our Past and Remembering this Past.

Conference – may contribute new values and knowledge about the consequences releasing a positive wish for closer relations; it provides a chance for opening a way for changes of mutual attitudes and feelings without denying the Memory of the Past but accompanied by belief and hope that mutual respect may only be achieved through a Dialogue.

The conference is organized under the auspices of the Michel de Montaigne Polish-French Foundation of New Democratic Practices in cooperation with the Polish and international scientific institutions interested in Polish-Jewish Dialogue.
Addressed to scientific and academic institutions, environments involved in the history and culture of Polish Jews, dialogue and education, teachers and students, people coming from Bialystok, its previous and present inhabitants as well as anyone who is interested in the subject matter.

The conference is supported by outstanding figures – the leaders of the Dialogue, representatives of intellectual environments, including those who are citizens of other countries but are of Bialystok origin.

We are especially honored by the fact Professor Samual Pisar - a Bialystok man who survived Auschwitz, a great intellectualist, international lawyer and writer, who is now living in Paris and New York, director of the Yad Vashem Institute in France supports the idea.
The international science and research project entitled "Reconciliation – Jews and Poles" is realized with the cooperation of Samuel Pisar and Fondation pour la Mémoire de La Shoah by the Michel de Montaigne Polish-French Foundation.

Bialystok Congress 2009 – is the first international conference in Bialystok which considers the issue of a Dialogue between Jews and Poles, which is a part of the research stream focused on learning about our own history as well as richness and diversity of cultures and complexity of mutual relations and coexistence in the Eastern Borderland of Poland.

We do hope that the Conference will be attended and supported by scientific and social environments, and the importance of discovering common Memory and multi-cultural Past of the Bialystok Region as the basis of the Polish-Jewish Dialogue will be understood.

המסר הכללי של הכנס הוא - דיאלוג וזיכרון בשטח ההבנה ההדדית ביחסים בין היהודים לבין הפולנים. האירוע קשור גם ליום השנה ה-65 של מרד גיטו ביאליסטוק וחיסולו.

זיכרון של חיים ומוות של יהודי ביאליסטוק כחלק בלתי נפרד בהיסטוריה של העיר ושל התרבות הפולנית.

דיאלוג וכבוד הזכרון כבסיס להבנה בין היהודים לבין הפולנים — תהליך שמאפשר להכיר את הרגשות של שתי האומות, מחזיר כבוד לזיכרון, מאפשר שינוי רעות קרומות ושינוי העמדות, יוצר תנאים להסברת ההבדלים והקרבה.

ביאליסטוק - עיר שבה, במשך מאות שנים,התקיימו ביחד תרבויות שונות, ביניהן תרבות יהודית עשירה. היום - מקום בו נוצר שטח חרש להבנה, תוך ההכרה וההזכרה של העבר.

הכנס מאורגן על ירי קרן פולנית  — צרפתית לפרקטיקות דמוקרטיות חדשות על שם מישל רה מונטן, בשיתוף פעולה עם מכונים מדעים מפולין ומרחבי העולם, העוסקים בדו - שיח פולני - יהודי.

 ציבור היעד של הכנס הם מוסרות המרע והאוניברסיטאות שחוקרים את ההיסטוריה ואת התרבות של יהודי פולין, שעוסקים בדיאלוג וחינוך, הם גם מורים וסטודנטים, כמו כן ילידי העיר ביאליסטוק, תושביה לשעבר ושל היום, כמו כן כל המעוניינים בנושא.

בכנס תומכים אישים בולטים רבים הקשורים לדיאלוג, חוגי האינטלקטואלים ואזרחי מדינות אחרות שמוצאם מביאליסטוק.
