In Memory of the Destruction of Czyzewo
A poem written in Yiddish, by Raizel Horowitz, born in Czyzewo and contributed by daughter Grace H. Ittleman, May 10^th 2000.
The Original Poem in Yiddish

Listen, people, hear, take note
of the village, Czyzewo, our beautiful town
where Jewish people dwelled, peaceful, remote
where the splendor of Torah was worn like a crown

Near a station lay our town
where there you once could board a train
this all existed, I saw it myself
now it is all gone: you'd search for it in vain

There the Jews lived
for generations they came
such a happy fulfilled life
though not a penny to their name

Where almost everyone's income
derived from a little store
a pipece of bread, it was enouh
we never needed more

Where in each little house
you'd find a table, a crib, a few beds
children, growing like flowers
blessings rained down on their heads

Growing up, families expanding
years fly by, time seemed so short
betrothals, only from the best
a learned son in law to support

So, this is the way life continued
day by day, and night by night
that is, until the hateful Hitler
shattered our world with his evil might

Chasing his flag of vicious power
he gave our cherished ones no rest
until the unthinkable happened
cutting short the lives of our best

Destruction of everything we valued
all vanished not even a trace
generations of Jews, lives so holy
Now gone, nothing left in its place

Never did Hitler consider
the idea that "One May Not"
six million burned in fire
the work of this evil despot

A shudder of horror shakes me
as my broken heart bemoans
cities full of precious Jewish people
reduced to a pile of bones

My soul, eternally shattered
beaten down and broken apart
forever I know I will suffer
this grief that tears at my heart

Czyzewo Yizkor Book Has Been Translated and in the Jewishgen Yizkor Books Database - September 2002

My Message to JewishGen 16.12.99

Dear friends,

I have in my possession a Yizkor book of the town of Czyzewo in the Lomza district, Poland, (coordinates 5248 2219): "Sefer Zikaron Czyzewo" "Memorial book Tshijevo", editor Shimon Kanc, published by Former residents of Czyzewo in Israel and the USA Tel Aviv, 1961, 1206 pages, Yiddish and Hebrew.

I got it from an elderly friend who knows about my special interest in these books. He said: "Don't ever sell it. It is a sin to make money from the tears... I am sure you will know what to do with it."

I consider donating it to anyone who will commit himself to translate selected articles form it into English and post in JewishGen Yizkor database or in any other site, including mine, together with some of the photos from this book.

Anyone out there willing to take the challenge, and has personal ties to this small town, please let me know.

Please note well, there is no necrology list and the whole large book is mostly in Yiddish and very few articles in Hebrew. There are though some "memorial candles" , see hereunder.

I am mainly interested to donate it, FREE, to anyone from this small town Czyzewo who will know to cherish this book, as it deserves, and will share it with others.

It will be better than accumlating dust on my overloaded shelves...

Mrs. Grace H. Ittleman nee' Horowitz from Czyzewo volunteered to help with all the translation process. She already has the book and will contribute some of the pages already translated by her. Other dedicated persons from the Yizkor Database team offered their help and I thank them in advance very much. But I am mainly looking for people from this town, CZYZEWO, a town so small, lost and forgotten...

On August 21, 1941, the Jews of Czyzewo were murdered and buried alive in a mass grave in the Schulzborge village, on the outskirts of Czyzewo.

This forgotten tragedy caused by the hands of the Germans , should be known and remembered!

The Matzeva for the Martyrs of Czyzewo who were murdered by the German Nazis and their collaborators and buried alive in the village of Schulzborge on 21.8.1941.

To the memory of the martyrs who were deported to Zabrow and gassed to death later in Auschwitz on 10.1.1943 and to the memory of the victims who returned to their hometown and killed by the Poles on 20.3.1945, after liberation.
Their memory will never be forgotten and is engraved in our hearts for eternity.
