My message to "Gombin Email Exchange Forum" 14.7.98

Subject: Diskette of "GOLD"

Shalom Chaverim ...

Dina Gershtein phoned me up: "Ada - I have a diskette of pure GOLD for you - the transliteration of the Old Registry Book of Gombin has been finished"!

So yesterday I got this GOLDEN special database, compiled from Russian and Polish, extracting all the JEWISH records out of the crumbling 183 pages of the book which miraculously survived.

You might remember the excitement KORB descendants had when I informed them that their family is recorded there, as well as Noam Lupo "Graduation Gift", and Jeremy who had the copy of the book for 7 months, but only when we checked it together in Hertzelya, did we find his g grandfather family, source of inspiration and motivation to all his activities for Gombin memory...

So this has been done for you and all Gombin lovers, Gombin descendants, Gombin roots seekers...

So this work is done also - BUT I still have to process the data, edit, check, proofread, etc etc etc... and some time is still needed until the whole book will be posted on the web, in my site.

I would gladly also send by email the complete file (in EXCEL) to who ever wish to have it, and I shall make a photo-copy to all who will wish to receive the original page where his family is recorded.

There were 3065 records originally, transliterated by Dina Gershtein, but now I noticed that still not all were Jewish records so I deleted many entries. The figure now is about 3000 records.

It cost NIS 1012 - $275. -

Yonathan Rigbi has donated $100 for this project and I paid myself another $175 from my own pocket. I send my deepest gratitude to Jonathan Rigbi and his family.
I don't know if the Gombin Society has funds for this type of project, as all the money collected recently was dedicated for the Memorial Projects in Poland.
In case this amount cannot be reimbursed by the Gombin Society, I shall appreciate modest contributions from you, all who benefit from this book, to cover this cost which I had in materializing this project.

It is also really a collective venture, and although I took the initiative and actually translated the data from Russian, it is for every Gombiner descandant and not myself only!

The sad news for me personally is that there is no "H" and no "G" and my own parents' family, Holcman and Gostinsky are NOT in those pages which survived... But there is a lot of all my "extended" family, family of GOMBIN...

So many TADELIS... incredible... you can find out according to the number of the houses they lived in - sorted NOW according to the House number - of course this was not the original order of the records - (the miracle of data processing)... There are a few Tadelis family lines, part of which belongs to Jeremy ancestors are finally sorted out... Family mysteries get a key to be solved at last...

The "VOLUME" and "PAGE" number refer to much more important registry books, where ALL other historical and genealogical information is registered. I wondered if these books, so much more important still exist somewhere. I checked it with professional genealogist from the JewishGen forum. He believed they might be kept at the Municipality, or Real Estate Register Office. But Lukaszewsky told me a few times, as well as Zalman Ben Itzhak that they are no other old books, which survived in Gombin...
Than Gideon Carmi went to Salt Lake City. He xeroxed for me, as I am the coordinator for transliterating the Mormons LDS microfilms of Plock Archive.
Then he informed me that during the Russian period, the vital records have another special structure, not the regular AKT number of the current year. They have: VOLUME number and PAGE number... there is all the information!!! In Plock! And I volunteered to be the Plockoordinator:-) BEFORE I realized this important fact... Now, who volunteers to help me with the transliteration of the Plock Indexes???
