I Remember

A poem from Rajzel Zychlinsky's book of English translations from the Yiddish: "God Hid His Face" 1997, (p. 48), sent by son Marek Kanter in honor of the poet's 90^th birthday, celebrated on July 27^th, 2000.

The poem originally published in the Yiddish poems book of Rajzel Zychlinsky: "Shvaygndike Teern" Silent Doors, New York, 1962. (page 94)

אזכור -

היה זה ערב,

כמו היום -

הייתי לבדי בגן.

הספסלים היו ריקים, נטושים,

כאילו ידעו

שאיש לא ישב שוב שם

לעולם.

אט נשרו עלים,

סופרים סתווים על פני האדמה.

דממה,

כמו לפני הסערה.

באיזו ארץ זה קרה?

באיזו עיר?

היה זה מקדש

ללא אלוהים

ללא מאמינים.

ואיך אני, משם,

נמלטתי?

I Remember

Dedicated to Jacob Patt

I remember -
It was an evening
like today -
I was alone in a park.
The benches were empty and abandoned,
as if they knew
that never again
would anyone sit on them.
Slowly the leaves were falling,
counting the autumns on the earth.
Silence was all around,
as before a storm.
In what country was that?
In what city?
It was a temple
without a God
and without worshipers.
And how did I, from there,
escape?
