WE REMEMBER GHETTO WARSAW!
Halina Birenbaum
Sounds
of a
guilty
silence
a little girl from the extermination years
I can always see myself as that little girl from the extermination years
I can feel her in myself incorrigibly
even now on the threshold of an old age
I remember only her
I identify with her character
although I try to distance everything else from myself
I can not forget
enormous in me is that eternal little girl
from those extermination years
she does not want to drown in the shadows of passing years
and different events
she is running with me throughout rime and all the roads
she does not allow me to pull myself together and to mature
constantly resuscitating the dark past
dictating, prompting, leading
I can't get free of her
I write about her, through her -
there is no end to her stories
no end
she will never disappear
never die
this little-big girl
old woman
from the extermination years
