My message to Gombin Email Exchange Group regarding the Old Registry Book of Gombin

Dear Fellow Gombiners: 6/5/98

Any Jewish genealogist with an interest in the town where our families lived and, in fact, where some of us were born, is very familiar with the fact that officially as we knew, no vital records survived the passage of time and the ravages of history.

However, the index to the Tenant Register volume did survive and it contains a list of virtually all the residents of Gombin from the period of 1850-1930. You read all about it in Jeremy article in the last Bnai Gombin issue and you can see more details at my page:

http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Rue/4017/OLDBOOK.HTM

The story of the survival of this document is a mystery and amazing by itself, kept by a German during WWII, who invaded the Stolcman House (my ggrandmother's!) and there it was found, years later. Why he did that and who was him, we might never know.

A sample of a one family's entry in this list is as follows:

Jeremy in his visit to Israel, gave me a special gift for the Pessach, a copy he finally made for me, of the 183 pages he got from Lukaszewski.

Now, we want to translate the thousands of entries in this incredible book to which we have access.

Most of the entries are in Russian so I cannot transliterate them myself. It needs a Russian translator.

I have negotiated with someone about the cost of doing this work. Her name is Dina Gershtein from Tel Aviv university, and she has started doing it already. We made an agreement. The cost is 0.33 NIS (33 agorot - about 9 cents) per an entry of Jewish surname.Since the book contains thousands of entries of non Jews (Poles and Folks-Deutche as well) we select before she transliterates, only the Jewish entries! and I pay a very good prize.

This is not done only for the Holcman/Gostinska odyssey friends! Is done for all of us. Considering may be that half of the book is dedicated to Jewish names, the maximum cost is going to be 2500 x $0.09 = $225.- but i shall know final sum when we finish.

Dina Gershtein transliterate also the Polish surnames and scan all the information into Excel file.

So do we have ~$200-$300 in the Gombin account which can be dedicated to this, or shall I make a special fund raising? Shall I make a "motion" about it?

I hope I shall not have to bear the expenses alone, as this must be shared by all Gombin and family roots lovers...

A copy of the entire completed index will be sent to all who are interested, will be posted in my and Gombin web home page and the index will be added to the JRI - Poland database so that those Gombiners we do not know yet, can iscover their family names and also discover us.

A last but not least remark!

============================

The book structure is:
HOUSE - the number of the house - (there were no streets - only numbers of the
houses - it indicates family lines when more than one surname like the Tadelis /Tibber/Holcman/Zolna cases.)

VOLUME & PAGE - This was an enigma - what are these columns? I checked with a professional genealogist through the web, and he advised me that these indexes refer to much more important books - other registry books, held usually at the local municipality, or by the authorities of the local real estate office. In the "real books" which this registry only refers to, is much richer genealogical information, incredible, as per my source.

Now, Gideon just returned from SLC where he spent a whole week with the Mormons xeroxed, among other things, also the pages of indexes for PLOCK, for the JwishshGen JRI CO-OP shtetl, for which I am the coordinator.

He will tell you all about it when rested enough and jet lag is over.According to Gideon, these treasure books are in the Plock regional archive!!!

They have survived, and they are very well there, and so may be it was not a coincidence that I chose to do Plock CO-OP shtetl... and I didn't know that at the times when I volunteered tgo be the Plockoordinator... You all will have to help me in that Plock project... it does not require special skills, believe me :-)...

We shall talk more about the Plock project after Gideon will send his report and you will understand more.

Shalom,

Ada
